Fallen sons

For reasons I cannot completely explain, I am disturbed and so saddened by the news of our five soldiers who raped and murdered an Iraqi girl and her family.

Maybe it's because I'm currently reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, and I do not understand the sicker side of humanity. What is more likely is that since becoming a mother, I have an unabashed and sickening fear of my son suffering through some malicious evil put upon him by a predator.

While I feel our reason for going to war is more financial than righteous, I still belive strongly in our armed forces and the men and women who serve our country. I believe their work is important and their dedication is unparalleled.

For example, my neighbor is a stay-at-home mother with four children whom she home schools. Her husband is a city engineer and a member of the reserves. He's been in Iraq for a year. I've seen, first hand, what his absence has cost his family, but his wife and children couldn't be more proud of his opportunity to serve.

Because of him, and others like him, I expect more from from our men and women. They were called to join the service and they stood up and said, "I will go for you." That's a noble calling. I expect them to act in a noble capacity. And when they don't, I can't help my disappointment.

You’re sister says that I’m just going to start an argument, but, far be it from me to back down from a good debate.

While I absolutely agree with you that the courageous people that defend our nation should be respected and appreciated, it’s also important to remember the rights and freedoms that they are committed too. As a Constitutional right they are innocent until proven guilty. As disingenuous as our government often is, particularly under the current administration, I think the media often convicts people in their court of hyperbole before anyone gets a fair day in court. Now, is that the case here? Who know. I tend to be a “they probably did it” kind of person as well, but this is really to heinous a crime to make any assumptions without having all the facts.

Alrighty… I’ll step off my soap box now and unbunch my pant-a-loons.
