In my quest to finish a mammoth freelance job for the yet-to-be-named tax prepartion company, I've been spending many nights folded up on the couch, the heat of the laptop warming the dimples on my thighs and a random movie playing in the background.
A few nights ago, I watched a largly unheard-of title, "Loverboy."
For the record, I am a momma. You may have heard me mention that before. But the ball of fire is my first, and currently only, favorite person in the world. I understand that mother/child bond. How it takes every preconceived notion of love and turns it upside down. How you can feel the desire to literally give your life for the happiness and safety of another.
There's a line from a church hymn, "It is the call of my heart to follow you.." That's the best summation of motherhood for me.
Of course, in the genre of movie-making, you take the normal and twist it to the extreme, as was in the case of this movie. She couldn't take it when her son's teacher took much interest in her son... emphasis on the HER son. I've felt that as well. I guard my time with my son with fervor from everyone including the hubby. He's my boy.
This Friday is my boy's 5th birthday. While I still grapple with his daily rejection of my company for that of his blonde siren next door (8 year olds, how can I compete?) there is also joy in watching him change, wondering what kind of man he will be. I only hope it's a man who really loves his momma.

Oh!! It only gets better!! Our latest problem was this year's local fair. My oldest son (14, soon to be 25) wanted to hang out with 'friends'. I later ran into him and his 'friends' happened to be 4 or 5 very cute high school girls.
He no longer gives me a kiss goodnight, not even a hug. He barely tells me goodnight at all!!
It all pays off though on those good days when he comes up and gives me a big hug and tells me he loves me.
Our relationship feels sort of how a 'teenage crush' starts out. There are days that I sit and ponder 'Does he love me? Why does he act so mean to me sometimes?'
Dear friend, you will learn that he will love you even when you think he has totally written you off as a bad debt. Maybe someday mine will realize that I'm not such a 'bad parent' after all.
