My brother-in-law sent me an e-mail the other day titled, "There is no god." In the body of the e-mail, there was no explaination, only a link to a story about the wildly popular "High School Musical 2."
I must admit, we watched it ... twice. I liked "High School Musical" and we were excited for the sequel. I liked the wholesome content, the fact that the lead couple never so much as kissed, let alone do anything else. I liked the fact that I could watch it beginning to end with a four-year old and never had to worry that he would see something I would have to explain.
That's rare these days. But it's also missed. I think the fact the movie was so popular is proof yet again that solid family entertainment is lacking.
Now before you get on my ass and call me a prude, one of my all-time favorite movies is "Fight Club." Second only to "Goodfellas." I know many interesting things about the Corleone family and I have repeatedly watched "Kill Bill, Vol. 1 and 2." I like my movies action-packed and gory. But never at any time, did the toddler watch with me.
I will also admit that we own the soundtrack.
As it so happens, about the time my brother-in-law sent the e-mail, I was reading the latest issue of Rolling Stone, which includes a little article about Zac Efron, lead guy from HSM. As it turns out, he never sang a damn word in that movie!
"I didn't even sing on the first album," he admits. "It wasn't my voice in the movie."
In that same issue of the magazine, the list of top 20 albums included the soundtrack for "High School Musical 2" and the newest CD from "Achy Breaky" loins, Miley Cyrus.
Proof that marketing to children can NEVER go to far.
