During a game of Trivial Pursuit: Pop Culture, the question was: "What Cars song won the title of best video at the innaugural MTV Music Awards?"
Without a moment's hesitation, the 20-something sitting next to me yells out, "Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts!"
I shot a puzzled look at the hubby. "That can't be right. What was the question again?" The question is read again.
"They mean Cars the band, not the movie," I tell her. Blank look.
"You know, the group, the Cars. Big in the '80s..." Blank stare. Game proceeds to move forward.
This is further proof of my on-going hatred of corporate radio. It is not the fault of this generation that they are no longer exposed to a range of music through mainstream channels. It is in fact, the fault of radio conglumerates such as Clear Channel that continue to drive the same pointless pop down our throats.
And who decides what constitutes the formula for chart-topping band? Why is this nauseating song played 12 times a day, while much better bands never see a big-time record deal?
It makes me long for the day when you could buy the love of a disc jokey for the price of a bottle of scotch and he would play your favorite records all day long.
Ok. So, I never really bribed a disc jokey, but I did see it happen to Dr. Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap in an episoide of "WKRP in Cincinnati."
And in case you're wondering, the answer is "You Might Think" from 1984. That was before they started getting weird and trying to sound like the Psychedelic Furs.

A couple of us at work have decided that once in awhile on "Casual Friday", we wear our 80's concert T-Shirts to work. It gets the kid's brains moving and questions start flying. I have my AC/DC and El Monstero (Pink Floyd Tribute band) shirts, another teacher wears her Rolling Stones. It's interesting to see how many kids actually know the music. We allow some of our kids to bring their I-Pods or MP-3 players in to listen to during recess or their free time and it's interesting to see what types of music they actually have on them.
On another note, I guess I'm a little out-dated myself, I had to ask a 4th grader the other day who "The Cheeta Girls" were. I thought it was a cartoon, but I was mistaken. :)
I love the Cars - because it reminds me that if Ric Ocasek can get Paulina Poriskova then I too can date a supermodel.
Ken, do I even need to comment on that statement?
